What I’m Really Chasing

There was a time I thought photography was about getting the shot.

Perfect light. Clean composition. Something “portfolio worthy.”
You know—the kind of image that makes other photographers nod slightly and say, “nice.”

High praise.

That’s where most people stay.

And to be fair, there’s nothing wrong with that. Bills don’t pay themselves, and no one’s hiring you because you had a spiritual moment in golden hour.

But the longer I do this, the more I realize—the photograph isn’t the point.

It’s the excuse.

An excuse to sit across from someone and actually see them… which is rare, because most people are too busy thinking about themselves.
Myself included, on a good day.

Portraits taught me that first.

You can’t fake connection. You can try—people do it all the time—but it shows. Either you’re present, or you’re just another guy with a camera saying, “yeah that looks great,” while mentally thinking about lunch.

I’ve been that guy too.

Travel made it harder to fake.

You land somewhere new and suddenly you’re not in control. Different language, different rhythm, different everything. It humbles you real quick. You either pay attention, or you come home with a bunch of photos that look like postcards no one asked for.

Landscapes… those will humble you without saying a word.

No direction. No feedback. No one telling you where to stand. Just you, the light, and your patience—or lack of it. The scene doesn’t care if you’re tired, late, or “not feeling it.”

It’s happening with or without you.

Same lesson, different form.

So no—I’m not chasing images anymore.

I’m chasing moments that feel honest.
Moments that don’t try too hard.
Moments that make me pause for a second and think, alright… that one mattered.

The camera just happens to be the tool I use to hold onto them.

And if I’m doing it right…
the photograph isn’t just something to look at.

It’s proof that I was actually there.

Not just physically—but present.

Which, these days, might be the rarest thing of all.
