Breathe Mi Gente
Breathe Mi Gente
Breathe in the air,
But don’t breathe too deep,
Half the world’s awake now,
The other half’s asleep.
A man checks his watch
Like time owes him rent,
Another buys crystals
To fix his resentment.
Somebody’s flexing
A leased BMW,
Acting enlightened
While cutting the queue.
The birds keep singing
Like nothing is wrong,
While humans make podcasts
Three hours too long.
A kid rides a bicycle,
Dust on his shoes,
Still richer in spirit
Than men on the news.
The waitress keeps smiling,
Her back’s nearly shot,
Still carrying coffees
For people who forgot
To say thank you once
In their privileged despair,
Too busy posting quotes
About love and self-care.
The old man keeps laughing,
His hands worn like stone,
The kind of face proving
A hard life gets known.
And somewhere a camera
Waits quietly still,
To capture a moment
No algorithm will.
So breathe in the air,
Let the strange world spin,
Most people look outward,
Few ever look in.
And life’s kind of funny—
A beautiful mess,
We’re all improvising
In varying dress.
Some searching for God,
Some searching for fame,
Some trying real hard
Just to stay sane.
But every now and then,
Through the noise and despair,
Someone becomes human
When they know someone’s there.
